Not having the standard software available can create problems even in small freelance projects, depending on the task. Blender is nice for open-source projects, but when every company uses Maya for rigging, learning to rig in Blender or 3Ds Max might not take you very far. If you go the self-taught route, I'd suggest considering what you want to specialize in and what sort of jobs would you like to do, then just do a lot of research to see what software they use in the industry for that particular role.

For 2D animation, ToonBoom lets you use their software for free and has a bunch of resources online that can aid you if you want to get a ToonBoom certificate. If you pay for online courses, some of them are going to provide all the software that is being used within the course. There's a bunch of stuff you can download in a non-commercial form and just use forever (Houdini, Mari, Nuke etc.). If you go to uni, you will have access to free software while you're a student, pretty much everything fron Autodesk, The Foundry and Allegorithmic. How are you planning to learn animation?
